Combine history, exercise and fresh air as you walk on the banks of the Lee in Ballincollig’s Royal Gunpowder Mills. History is a little less accessible these days because the information centre for the Mills closed a few years back.

That section is now all closed off but you can glimpse part of it behind the wire and the greenery. Turn west here and you have quite a long walk to the Inniscarra Bridge. In truth, the single walk isn’t that long but don't forget you must also get back to your car. 

And of course you may start at either end,  in the east (by the old Gunpowder Mills tourist centre) or at the west (by the bridge). Allow at least an hour to do the round trip. See walk starting from the bridge here

Turn in by Aldi’s on the main road and then veer right down to the Powdermills. Walk through the gate facing you at the end and you are on your way. If you then take the grass path down to the right, you’ll be by the river. The path here is studded with tree roots while the main path west is much easier to walk on.

No matter which way you go, and there are a few loops and detours, you’ll pass more of the ruined buildings of the old Powdermills complex and you’ll soon get the impression that it was busy here in the 19^th century. The mills once employed over 500 people.

It wasn't that busy at all this morning as I passed along the river, walked over one or two of the canals (dug for the mills). Didn't go the whole way this time but did a few weeks back. The western end is more by the river and then too you have the football pitches on your left as you head for the Inniscarra Bridge. Attracted by Nelly the Elephant, a rather big girl, I made my first visit to Buckley Fine Art in historic Fenns Quay a few weeks back. Made my second visit last week and lingered in an interesting conversation with Ken Buckley.

“We are the last independent commercial gallery left in the city,” said Ken. “Our main business is with houses, hotels and restaurants and also with big public buildings. But I’d say seventy per cent or over is with the general public.”

Last November’s floods were the last thing the gallery needed but they have moved on and are working hard as all commercial units have to in these recession hit days. The big problem for art dealers is not so much the lack of cash, rather “the lack of confidence”.

The answer is to get out and work at it and Buckley are doing just that. You are welcome to go to the gallery and also their main base in Clonakilty. Don't worry if you can’t call in. They’ll call to you with a selection.

Worried about buying a painting and finding later it really doesn’t fit. Then Buckley’s also allow you to do a test run. Hang the painting at home for a few days and see how you feel about it. By the way, the Clonakilty gallery is in an actual house, with different coloured walls and furnishings, with rooms that are bright and some that are less so, and is ideal for trying out a painting for your own home.

Buckley represent a whole range of artists including the likes of Bill Griffin who had an exhibition a few months back at the Vision Centre. Perhaps the best known at the moment is “extreme “painter Phillip Gray, currently on Everest,  painting as he goes. Gray has painted underwater with sharks among the watchers and also under the live volcanoes of Iceland.

Aside from direct sales, Buckley run an interior design service and have commercial solutions for places such as hotels and number Hayfield Manor and the Castlemartyr among their clients. The interior design service is free consultation with customers to help them choose the right artist/piece of art and framing options for the space they are working on.

Ken sees the buying of art as being better than an investment in the stock market. “The stock market is risky and goes up and down, as we know, but a well chosen art work appreciates in value and you have the pleasure of seeing it hanging there in your house!”

And a good piece of art needn’t be overly expensive. ““We have prints starting at €80.00.” Now that’s something Nelly the Elephant won't forget this Christmas.

JAZZ AT THE CAT

Can’t wait for the jazz? Want a little taster? Then do what I did today and drop into the CAT on Carroll’s Quay to view a photo exhibition which consists of shots of the artists who have entertained us at the Cork Jazz Festival over the years.  Local aces plus some of the big names are featured and nice to see the work of local sports photographer ace Eddie O’Hare as he tackles a different type of action.

That exhibition started yesterday and continues for the week. You got to be quick to catch the other jazz related event here as that takes place this Tuesday evening (8.00) when Greg Felton meets Isa Wiss.

The blurb carries a warning: Brace yourself for a few bombshells as Greg Felton's trio go head to head with the incomparable vocalist Isa Wiss. This is part of the big Jazz Fringe and tickets cost €15.00.

FOTA HOUSE

FOTA HOUSE 

Here are the two main reasons for a visit to Fota House:

1: The house is now home to one of the finest collections of Irish art in the country.

2: The glorious Neo-Classical architecture and innovative designs.

The 19^th Fota House has had its share of ups and downs in recent decades but now the curve seems to be on the up. At the end of 2207, Irish Heritage Trust took over care of the house and there have improvements ever  since.

The house re-opened to the public in April 2009 after a major restoration project undertaken by the Trust during the winter of 2008/9. The Trust is proud that this architectural masterpiece and treasure house of art can now be enjoyed and celebrated by everyone.

Thanks to the generosity of the McCarthy family, AIB and the Irish Government, Fota House is now home to one of the finest collections of Irish art in the country.  Particular highlights of the collection are masterpieces of the Eighteenth-Century Irish landscape school.

This week, I went back to the Arboretum and Garden of Fota House for the first time in decades. Both were transferred to state care in 1996 and are now in the care of the Office of Public Works in conjunction with the Irish Heritage Trust.

This is a world class visit and, amazingly, it is free to enter. This just can’t last so get there while you can. Must say though, if an entry fee here is applied, there should be no cribbing. Similar venues on the continent, many of them nowhere near the same class as Fota, charge around ten euro entry.

There are some splendid specimens here. The amateur like me can just look in awe but anybody interested in trees and plants will get so much more out of a visit. Quite a lot of the items are labelled and I came across a Lawson Cypress that was planted here in 1847 and a towering Japanese cedar, without a planting date, but which had reached 4.2 metre in diameter in 1966 and 4.5 by 1984.

It is a not a very long walk but there are quite a few paths that loop back into one another and magnificent vistas, including water, open out as you wander round. The odd time you will see a piece of sculpture or maybe you will glimpse the big house through the greenery.

Eventually, you come closer to the house. My first stop in this area was the Orangery where lemons and oranges (still green) were hanging from the glass walled and roofed enclosure.

Then it is on to the Pleasure Garden which encloses big borders and also a rose garden and one little buildings where you may sit and take it all in. The entrance is through an arched doorway where a fig tree grows.

Big displays of dahlias caught the eyes in the borders but they were just one of so many flowers and grasses. The roses, enclosed by sharply cut hedging, still looked good considering how late in the year it is.

“In the 1840's, John Smith-Barry showed considerable foresight in generously spacing the trees, enabling them to thrive as they do today with stunning seasonal displays of colour. The (Smith-Barry) family also recorded the plant collections throughout the 19th century and this important work of cataloguing, conservation and development continues today. Many of these plant collections are arranged in association with the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin, and other botanic institutions such as the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, Scotland.”

After the walk, you have the opportunity of visiting the house or taking a meal in cafe or both.

Went through the smashing new entrance to Fota Wildlife Park yesterday and enjoyed a great stroll in the sun. The animals too enjoyed the extra heat and seemed to be even livelier than usual. The new entrance was hardly tested at all yesterday as the season winds down. There are also new toilets, with sinks at just the right size for the kids to wash their hands. The new café and shop also looked well and work continues around the parking areas.

Great spot for a visit. If you are a local, you should consider becoming a member. For just over the price of a couple of visits, you’ll get a pass for the full year. I find it invaluable as I vary my visit times and, without fail, see some action or animal in a situation that I haven't seen before. Quite a lot of activity yesterday morning but perhaps the highlight was the sleeping red panda baby Rua, born just about a month back.
